The SOLSTICE, as defined in Astronomy,
is a term applied to either of the two points in the ecliptic orbit of
a celestial body. This happens when the sun is most distant from the celestial
equator. The solstice north of the celestial equator is the Summer Solstice. The sun then is at its greatest declination on June 22. For the northern
Hemisphere this is the beginning of summer. The Winter Solstice occurs
on December 22 south of the celestial equator. The seasons reverse for
people living in the southern Hemisphere. The term solstice means "sun
stands still". When the sun appears to remain in one place north or south
of the celestial equator, the season for dancing the Solstice is here.
In Astronomy the word "eclipse"
means the obscuring of one celestial body by another. Usually the sun obscures
a planetary satellite. Two kinds of eclipses involve the earth. The moon,
or lunar eclipse occurs when the earth is between the sun and the moon. The shadow of the earth darkens the moon. A solar eclipse occurs when the
moon is between the sun and the earth. Its shadow darkens the face of the
earth.
The Spring Equinox, March 21 marks
the beginning of the pregnancy of the Goddess of nature and fertilization. We see Her pregnancy as the rising of the waters of the continents in spring. The rivers overflow, the snow melts, life returns to flora and fauna. It
begins to grow and flourish and we celebrate this at the Spring Equinox.
